Best laptops for running AI locally
Updated October 28, 2026 · By the SuperiNow team
"Best AI laptop" means different things depending on what you do with AI. There are three kinds of laptop worth considering, and each is best at something different.
First, how do you use AI?
- Mostly in the browser (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, HeyGen): almost any modern laptop works. The AI runs in the cloud. Spend your money on a good screen, keyboard and battery.
- Built-in AI features (live captions, background blur, on-device assistants, AI photo tools): a Copilot+ PC or a recent MacBook handles these on the laptop itself.
- Running AI models yourself (local chatbots, coding assistants, image generators): you need lots of memory, either unified memory on a MacBook Pro or video memory on an RTX graphics chip.
1. MacBook Pro: the best all-rounder for local AI
See the MacBook Pro lineup and configurations at Apple. Apple's M-series chips share one pool of unified memory between the processor and graphics, so a MacBook Pro with lots of memory can run surprisingly large models, quietly and on battery.
- For local AI, choose the memory carefully. It can't be upgraded later. 32 GB is a sensible minimum for running models; 48–64 GB or more opens up much bigger ones (see our Mac mini vs Mac Studio guide for what each amount can run).
- The Pro and Max chips have more graphics cores, so models answer faster.
- Best for: people who want one laptop for everything, including local AI, with excellent battery life.
- Not ideal for: tools that require an NVIDIA graphics card.
2. Copilot+ PCs: best for built-in AI features
Windows laptops sold as Copilot+ PCs have a dedicated AI chip (an NPU) rated at 40 or more TOPS, plus at least 16 GB of memory. They come with processors from Qualcomm (Snapdragon X), Intel (Core Ultra) and AMD (Ryzen AI), in lines like the Dell XPS, HP OmniBook, Lenovo Yoga and ThinkPad, and ASUS Zenbook.
- Great at: Windows AI features, long battery life, light weight.
- Limited for: running larger AI models yourself. The NPU is built for efficient built-in features, not big chatbots.
- Best for: students and professionals who want AI features without carrying a heavy laptop. Read our AI PC specs explainer for what the numbers mean.
3. RTX laptops: best for NVIDIA-based AI tools
Laptops with an NVIDIA RTX 50 series graphics chip run the widest range of AI tools, especially image and video generation and tools built for NVIDIA.
The catch: laptop GPUs have less video memory than desktop cards with the same name.
| Laptop GPU | Video memory | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| RTX 5050 / 5060 / 5070 Laptop | 8 GB | Small models (around 7–8B), basic image generation |
| RTX 5070 Ti Laptop | 12 GB | Up to about 13B models, better image generation |
| RTX 5080 Laptop | 16 GB | 14B models comfortably; strong image generation |
| RTX 5090 Laptop | 24 GB | Up to about 30B models; the most capable laptop GPU |
- Best for: people who need NVIDIA tools, or want a powerful laptop for AI and gaming.
- Trade-offs: heavier, louder under load, and shorter battery life when the GPU is working.
Quick picks by situation
| You are... | Look at |
|---|---|
| A student who uses AI in the browser | Any well-built laptop with 16 GB of memory; a Copilot+ PC for built-in AI features |
| A creator or professional who wants local AI on the go | A MacBook Pro with 32–64 GB of unified memory |
| Someone who needs NVIDIA tools or image generation | An RTX laptop with 16 GB of video memory or more (RTX 5080 Laptop and up) |
| On a tight budget | Use cloud AI on a laptop you already have; spend the savings on a subscription |
The short version: decide how you use AI first. For local AI, memory is the spec that matters: unified memory on a Mac, video memory on an RTX laptop. Laptop models change every few months, so check the exact configuration and memory on the maker's spec sheet before you buy.
